The electronic teacher bulletin board was created as a better alternative to the traditional teacher bulletin board. These particular boards are large displays that sync a computer and projector. Ideally then the electric board is mounted on a door stand or a wall. The computer then creates a replicated image on the board of the PC desktop where the instructor or educator becomes the interface between the computer and the electronic whiteboard.

Instructor Benefits:

The question of whether or not they are worth the value of a purchase would obviously come down to the usefulness both the educator and students place on the device. As far as the educator using this kind of device can make their job much easier; They allow the instructor to store notes and annotations electronically in different transferable formats so they save a great deal of time.

Learner Benefits:

For students the value is also immense seeing that they can access the lessons in the form of digital video files for continual review, make up for missed lessons, or step by step tutorials. The fact is these boards like all technology are tools and tools make life easier. They create a more interactive learning environment which heightens learning and cuts down the distraction of personal recording of information. Electronic whiteboards have been proven to affect learning and instruction positively, and are seen as an effective and advanced means of teaching.

So what’s the final conclusion? Electronic whiteboards are worth every dollar and every second invested in them and it is advisable for teachers the world over to embrace them as the next level of transference of knowledge in a class, home or business environment.

When you think of Atlanta, hip-hop immediately comes to mind. In my case, grits also come to mind ... but mainly hip-hop. Atlanta is the "center of gravity" of hip-hop, Southern rap, R&B and neo-soul. Most music fans are all well aware that artists like Outkast, Ludacris, Goodie Mob/Cee Lo Green, Lil Jon, T.I. and B.o.B all hail from the ATL, but this southern sonic city is also a hotbed for rock, country and pop. The Black Crowes, Indigo Girls, Sugarland, Sevendust and even Justin Bieber call Atlanta home (well, the Canadian Biebs calls it his U.S. adoptive home -- close enough). I went to Atlanta to discover what it is about this peachy-keen city that makes it so keen on music ... and hopefully on puns as well.

My first stop was Fantasyland Records, an Atlanta music scene staple since 1976. Eric Clapton, the Ramones, and my personal favorite rock god of all time, Robert Plant, have all walked through its doors to shop for tunes. In addition to its legacy, Fantasyland is also known for selling new vinyl, another indicator of the record resurgence. I love that a new generation is actually purchasing record players so that they can experience music in a whole new way ... well, new for them anyway. I wonder if 8-tracks will be next. Nah, they won't.

Next, I met up with Sevendust drummer Morgan Rose, who has been voted "No. 1 Metal Drummer" by Modern Drummer Magazine, and one of "The Top 100 Drummers Of All Time" according to Drum Magazine and Drummerworld. I also awarded him with picking the best lunch spot of all time, being that the seafood spot he selected, Steamhouse Lounge, boasts "We Shuck 'em, You Suck 'em." 'Nuff said. We talked about the rise and impact of Sevendust and how even the Atlanta rock community was grateful for artists like Outkast for helping to put Atlanta on the map. I explained to Morgan that I was grateful for Sevendust's angst anthems, which provided the soundtrack for my teenage years. Everyone here was grateful, except for the oysters.

%VIRTUAL-Gallery-155451%
From Sevendust to Stankonia ... I headed to the studio complex where Outkast makes their magic. Big Boi told me that Atlanta's streets bring the edge to the current music scene and that a lot of new great music is coming out in the mix. Also in the mix, is his favorite fried chicken spot, Curly's, which I obviously had to try for myself. Per his suggestion, I enjoyed one of Curly's combo specials, complete with "Buddy's Secret Sauce" and "purple" Kool-Aid, and felt that between our studio hang and our dinner order, Big Boi and I had truly bonded. Unfortunately, due to this fried food feast, I had now become bonded with my chair and had to be jimmied out of it.

Keeping the grit of ATL going by eating grits, I met up with David Banner for breakfast the next morning at The Beautiful Restaurant, the soul food spot featured in the lyrics of Goodie Mob's song 'Soul Food.' David explained that Atlanta's signature sound is based on its soul and warmth. According to the rapper, you can feel it in the music and you can taste it in the food. I went ahead and tested that for myself. Confirmed.

112's Q Parker and I met up later that afternoon at Atlanta's beautiful Piedmont Park. I thanked him for his hit 'Only You,' and we discussed how collaborating with Biggie and Puffy helped transition 112's sound from R&B to hip-hop. He referred to the city's music scene as a musical buffet. Well, actually, I was the one who used that phrase, but Q agreed that it was a fitting metaphor. We were like two peas in pod, but it was probably a fried pod. We're in Atlanta.

Although Atlanta truly is a hotbed for music of all genres; serves piping hot soul food; and is very hot there most of the time, whatever you do, DO NOT call it "HotLanta." The locals don't dig that expression. Don't get caught up in the nicknames, just dig in on what is important -- it's a main course of hip-hop with a healthy side of rock, pop, and country -- and you'll be in for one of the best musical meals in the country.

Seattle is synonymous with three of my favorite things: grunge, rain and coffee, which somehow complement each other in the most effortlessly cool, moody way. It's the birthplace of Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' the anthem of Generation X and the song heard 'round the world ... AND it was the song that changed my world forever.

As one of my favorite cities in the country, I've been here a handful of times to see bands at venues like the Showbox, and yes, I've geeked out in all of my music maven glory at places like the Experience Music Project once or twice ... okay a plethora of times.

But this time I dug a little deeper. I, of course, frequented my favorites like Pike Place and journeyed through a jillion of java joints, but this time I grabbed my galoshes and trekked down the yellow brick road of this "Emerald City" to see the wizards behind this musical renaissance of grunge.

I met up with Sub Pop founder Jonathan Poneman, who took me on a tour of the record label credited with first signing Nirvana and Soundgarden, as well as other amazing bands like the Postal Service, Fleet Foxes, Wolf Parade, Foals and the Shins. It was surreal, indeed.

I also hung out with a Seattle soundtracker, who is best known for his 1992 Grammy Award-winning records. Chris Cornell? Eddie Vedder? Dave Grohl? Nope. In fact, I'm pretty sure this Seattle native never even donned a flannel. I'm talking about the one and only emcee and producer Sir Mix-A-Lot. That's right; the 'Baby Got Back' legend took me for a drive, pointing out all the spots that inspired his hit 'Posse on Broadway.' Of course I went with Mix to 'Dick's' -- let's just say it was one of the best milkshakes of my life.

%VIRTUAL-Gallery-154877% After spending my morning reliving the stories of old school hip-hop with Mix, I spent my afternoon with Seattle native Macklemore, who is currently carrying the hip-hop torch. Fans have played his videos over 20 million times on YouTube; XXL Magazine just included him in the Freshman Class of 2012; and he's selling out venues around the country. You're going to be hearing a lot more from Macklemore (pun intended).

We came, we ate, and learned a lot about the scene in Seattle.

I spent Record Store Day at the iconic Everyday Records talking music with the most diehard music fans there are. Vinyl was flying off shelves. I rest my case.

After exploring the music scene for countless hours, I cashed in my jukebox journey at Seattle staple 13 Coins, which is famous for its 24-hour menu and being THE go-to spot for band eats after a late-night gig. I opted for the crab eggs benedict made with Dungeness crab and the housemade Hollandaise sauce they make every hour. Oh yes, it's Sir Mix-A-Lot's favorite too. We have so much in common.

We came, we ate, and learned a lot about the scene in Seattle. We uncovered sonic secrets like the fact that Jimi Hendrix's first gig was at Seattle's Temple De Hirsch basement. He was also fired mid-performance for his wild playing. Standard. Sir Mix-A-Lot, Macklemore and rabid music fans helped us debunk the myth that Seattle is all about grunge -- hip-hop, folk, and soul also have a strong sonic stamp. Oh, and by the way, it turns out Seattle is actually not that soggy after all. Its annual rainfall is less than that of Houston, Chicago and New York.

Well, rain or shine, Seattle is certainly one of my favorite cities on the planet. It truly does have its own eclectic signature sound.

Stars like Courtney Love, Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell have transformed their looks with the times. See how they went from grunge to glam over the past two decades.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Making Memories in Music City

Allison Hagendorf samples the music, food, culture and fashion of Music City.
Nashville, Tenn. is one of my favorite cities in the country. Only in Nashville are you greeted in the airport by the invitingly distinct sound of live steel guitar and the voices of country superstars like Taylor Swift and Vince Gil welcoming you to "Music City." In Nashville, everyone is either a musician, a music fan, or works in the music business ... and I make it my business to take in as much music (and BBQ) while I'm in town.

These Boots Were Made For Walking
Before I could make my plans with the Nashville bands, I had to get a new pair of authentic cowboy boots, obviously. First stop was Trail West aka "Boots 'N' More." Boot experts Carol and Cowboy Bleu (Bleu also moonlights in the rodeo circuit as a bull rider) helped me reign in these black beauties. I was now geared up and ready to rock Music Row.

A Haunted History
The Ryman Auditorium first opened in 1892, and is best known as the epicenter of Music City and as the most famous former home of the Grand Ole Opry. Artists ranging from James Brown and Neil Young to Coldplay and Mumford and Sons have all played at this iconic venue, but what is perhaps equally intriguing is that The Ryman is known to be haunted. I had the opportunity to speak with Nashville ghost hunter Joanne Shelton, who performs the scientific investigation of ghosts, classic hauntings and other paranormal phenomena in Tennessee. Joanne explained that the most famous ghost of the Ryman is Hank Williams Sr. and that Elvis has been known to make a phantom encore there as well. Her apparition anecdotes were so detailed, the stories of the Ryman literally gave me the chills, which worked out perfectly because it was time to see some very famous jackets made by Nashville's original "Bling King," Manuel.

The Man Behind 'Man In Black'
Nothing could prepare me for my meet-up with Manuel, the man responsible for making Johnny Cash the "Man in Black"; for crafting Elvis' signature gold lamé suit; for fashioning the garments Bob Dylan wore when performing for the Pope; and for creating the insignias of both the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. Manuel is an artist ... and a character. He could not have been any more charming and chivalrous (he took me by the elbow as he escorted me around his lair of legacy), and I found myself holding onto every syllable of his countless stories surrounding the artists, presidents and actors for whom he's costumed. I also found myself holding onto this studded one-of-a-kind hand crafted New York jacket created by Manuel. I was asked to put it down ... immediately.
Singing Like a Bird at the Iconic Bluebird Cafe
The famous Bluebird Cafe nests in an unassuming Nashville strip mall, making it hard to believe that artists like Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift got their wings in this very spot. I was fortunate to be there on a Monday evening for the coveted weekly open mic ritual. Songwriting hopefuls migrate from around the country with dreams of being selected to perform a single song for the room of fellow songwriters. I was captivated by the courage of these songwriters exposing both their art and themselves to a room full of strangers. It was a truly inspiring experience, and there were definitely a couple of golden eggs in there. Ok, I'm done with the bird references.

BBQ Country with Cody
I ate like a pig at Hog Heaven where I enjoyed my "meat and three" with music journalist Cody Alan. For fellow Northerners not familiar with the phrase, "meat and three" refers to customers picking a meat accompanied by three sides. I opted for the pulled chicken alongside BBQ beans, turnip greens and a cornmeal pancake, aka a winning trifecta. Cody and I discussed how country music has gone mainstream and how although pop country started as early as the 1950s it has certainly reached its height with artists like Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum, who together brought in 13 Grammy wins this past February. We both agreed that country music is in a great place right now, and we also agreed that so were we. Hog Heaven is pretty heavenly.

Nashville Rock Bands Not Getting the Twang of It
Everyone knows that Nashville is known for country music, but for years that same association served as a curse for rock bands trying to make it out of Music City. I met up with Nashville Scene writer Adam Gold, who explained that years before bands like Kings Of Leon and the White Stripes put Nashville on the rock radar, bands out of the twang territory struggled to be taken seriously. It all started in the early '80s with the band Jason and the Nashville Scorchers, who were pressured by their label to drop the "Nashville" from their name. The band never secured the superstardom for which they were positioned, and so the Nashville Curse was born: No rock band from Nashville would ever sell a million records. The "Curse" commanded for 20 years and was finally broken by female-fronted band Paramore ... and the rest is history, including the curse.

Rocking with Mona
I met up with Mona frontman Nick Brown, on the patio of his immaculate home studio where the autonomous Mona writes/records all of the band's music. Nick explained that Nashville's legends a la Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson serve as his musical muse, and that it was the camaraderie of the Nashville music scene that was responsible for Mona touring with platinum-selling, Grammy Award-winning Kings Of Leon. In fact, Nick shared with me that he and Kings Of Leon's, Jared Followill are currently using Nick's home studio to develop their new side project together. Stay tuned for more inside scoop on that group, but in the meantime check out the video for Mona's latest single, 'Lean Into The Fall.' You're welcome ;-)

Nashville was an unbelievable treat and not just because of the meat ... although that was part of it. Most importantly, there is a certain sense of respect in the Nashville community that makes it feel more like a musical family. There's a legacy here that lures you in whether you're writing music or just enjoying it as a fan; a sonic sanctuary of sorts. These new boots from Trail West are not coming off. These boots were made for walking and walking down Nashville's Music Row is exactly what they'll do. New York will understand...

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Name-Dropping Nashville

TK TK TK%VIRTUAL-Gallery-155878%
